A short 2 hour-ish drive from Orange County, this hike is technically outside the National Park entrance. Black Rock Campground is where you will park. The hike begins fairly close to the main building/parking area for non campers. The 6-mile trail is marked with a sign so make sure you follow the right one, as there are other hikes to do in this area. About halfway or a little more was a confusing trail turn, where one of the loops you can do connects to it. Make sure you stay to the right on the "loop" part and eventually it will be more clear of which will take you to Warren Peak. The elevation gain is spread out over the course of the trail...until the very end. The last little stretch is a very clear elevation gain, but the end is in sight, so more motivation to get to the peak. The majority of the "hike" is basically walking through a sandy/desert dried up"river bed". Until the final stretch which is more like your typical dirt style trail. There is minimal coverage from trees, so DEFINITELY wear layers or sunscreen. Also being in Joshua Tree is always a must to have plenty of water. We actually ran into a rattlesnake when we were there too, so keep an eye out for these guys. The full 360 view at the top is another one which makes it worth the 2.5-hour trek. Always remember lots of water/sunscreen and you're good to go. NO DOGS ALLOWED.
