Mount Islip beckons to hikers and nature enthusiasts seeking an unforgettable adventure. Among the various trails that lead to the mountain's summit, the Windy Gap Trail offers a unique and scenic route that showcases the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Embarking on this trail promises awe-inspiring vistas, serene forests, and a rewarding sense of accomplishment as you conquer the heights of Mount Islip. A top rated hike in SoCal.
Trail Overview: The Windy Gap Trail is a moderate-to-strenuous route that spans approximately 8 miles roundtrip, starting from the Crystal Lake Recreation Area. This trail allows hikers to experience the diverse ecosystems of the San Gabriel Mountains, transitioning from dense forests to exposed ridges with panoramic views. It offers a longer and more challenging alternative to the popular Islip Ridge Trail, perfect for those seeking a more immersive and adventurous journey. Windy Gap Trail is one of my favorites in the ares. You can access a few different peaks from here, so we have been on it a few times. Elevation gain isn't horrible, but due to starting elevation being higher than sea level, it can catch up to you quick. Once you've reached the summit, you can head bad down the way you hiked up. Or you can continue on Islip Ridge Trail towards Big Cienega Trail, which will connect back with Windy Gap Trail.
Trailhead and Parking: To begin your Windy Gap Trail adventure, head to the Crystal Lake Recreation Area, accessible via the Angeles Crest Highway (SR 39). Parking is available near the entrance, but it's recommended to arrive early, especially during weekends or peak hiking seasons, as spaces can fill up quickly. You will need an Adventure Pass or America the Beautiful Pass.
Forested Beauty: As you set foot on the Windy Gap Trail, you'll find yourself immersed in a lush forest of towering Jeffrey pines, white firs, and various types of oak trees. The trail gradually ascends and sun exposure is prime. Don't forget the sun protective gear to keep cool. The sounds of birds chirping and the rustling of leaves underfoot accompany your journey, creating a peaceful ambiance. We barely ever encounter a ton of hikers on this trail. You can expect much more serenity.
Windy Gap: The trail gradually steepens and unveils stunning panoramic views as you approach Windy Gap, a breathtaking overlook showcasing the surrounding peaks, valleys, and the vast expanse of the Mojave Desert. This vantage point is a perfect spot for capturing memorable photographs, relishing the grandeur of the landscape, and catching your breath before the final push to the summit. As expected, it will be WINDY AF here! Haha.
Mount Islip Summit: From Windy Gap, the trail continues to climb for another half-mile until you reach the summit of Mount Islip. As you ascend, the vistas become even more expansive, offering breathtaking views of the San Gabriel Mountains, the Los Angeles cityscape, and on clear days, glimpses of the Pacific Ocean. Reaching the summit is a remarkable achievement, and you'll be rewarded with a sense of accomplishment and a profound connection to the natural world. Small hut ruins from where they used to sleep when the fire lookout was still in tact. The Islip tower only stood for about a decade until being relocated to South Mount Hawkins in 1938.
Safety and Preparation: Hiking the Windy Gap Trail requires proper preparation and safety measures. Check weather conditions, dress in layers, wear sturdy hiking boots, and carry essential hiking gear, including plenty of water, snacks, a map, a compass, and a first aid kit. It's crucial to be mindful of your physical abilities and take breaks as needed. Inform someone about your hiking plans, estimated return time, and always practice Leave No Trace principles to preserve the natural beauty of the trail.
Overall this trail is a wonderful hike to get away from the crowds and really embrace nature for its true beauty.

As always pack it in and pack it out.
