Park behind Heavenly near the state-line at Van Sickle Bi-State Park. If you take this straight up to the Rim Trail, it'll be about 4 miles before you reach it. So roughly 8 miles round-trip just to touch the Rim Trail and back down. The Rim trail actually goes around the entire lake so it is possible to do MANY miles of hiking. I have only done the Van Sickle Trail out and back for 8-miles. Made it to the Rim Trail, but only had enough time for going thus far. This trail offers a steady incline and switchbacks....and as we got further, fewer people were on the trail. It is very popular fo the beginning section so remember to go further to escape the crowds. The first-mile section takes you up and gives a decent overview of the lake.

It was obvious who was in it for the short duration, quick views and who was going further. There is also a little waterfall which people tend to use this as their destination. Plenty of mixture between covered and non covered areas. So bring plenty of water and sunscreen and protective clothing. I recommend this trail for families and those who like the option for an open amount of miles to be covered, epic views and great mountain feel. Whether you go to the waterfall, Rim Trail or more and back. Guaranteed to have a good time. My parents have also done Van Sickle to the Rim trail to Kingsbury. This means you need someone to drop off and pick you up. Or you park at one end and get picked up. So plenty of options to do when headed towards/to the Rim Trail.
