Trail: Pine Knot

Miles: 7.7

Type: Out and Back

My Time: 4.3 Hours

Elevation Gain/Loss: 1214 ft.

Difficulty: Moderate due to snow

Parking Permit: Yes, Adventure Pass

Location: San Bernardino National Forest

As my second time doing this hike, but first time covered in snow. I was still happy with how the hike went. FYI, snow makes the hike take a little bit longer. So when we had done this hike in summer, it was less than 3 hours. Whereas when it was covered in snow, it took us almost 4.5 hours. All depending on the conditions of the snow. It was mostly hard packed from previous hikers...but this lead to a lot of uneven surfaces. For those of you who have hiked with microspikes before, then you know they grab onto everything. What we noticed was the spikes would grab the uneven hard snow and roll your ankle slightly in one direction. Nothing too crazy to sprain your ankles...but enough to slow you down.

Like most places in Big Bear...especially after snowfall. The parking is limited. A ton of families use this area for sledding and picnicking. In order to avoid them and snag a parking spot, GO EARLY!

This trail can be found on AllTrails and is very easy to follow along, even covered in snow. There is a decent amount of tree coverage, but I always recommend sun protection.

You need an adventure day pass or annual. These can be purchased at REI, all ranger stations and some local small markets. The length of this trip is about 7-miles. Clearly marked trails with signs so very difficult to get lost. There are a ton of different routes possible in this area, so if you'd like to venture off into a different loop go for it. Search google for the trail maps and make up your own day hike! It has roughly 1000 foot elevation gain, but it leads to an amazing view of the mountains opposite of the lake. For those unfamiliar, this is San Gorgonio and the neighboring peaks. The valley view you get is something words can't describe. We sat here for awhile and took in the view.

The elevation gain is spread over the length of the trail so it is not very obvious or difficult by any means....other than the fact you are already in higher elevation due to being in the mountains in Big Bear, CA. This hike is full of amazing forest smells and a ton of nature to make you realize how insignificant as humans we really are. Don't skip this hike if you want a moderate to easy hike with an unbeatable view as the prize.

As always pack it in and pack it out!
