Need a quick getaway from Orange County or nearby? Hit this mountain trail up at the Lake. On the North side of the lake, roughly 6.5-mile roundtrip. This hike takes you from the lakeside, up and over...for a complete lake view. Which when the lake is at full capacity would be gorgeous. Even though when I went and the lake was low, it still was a pretty view. Will need to come back and enjoy a pretty view, once we have enough snow melt to fill the lake. Takes about 2-hours total, but add any extra time if you want to sit and take it in. I sat around for about 10 mins, then was antsy to get back down the trail. Considering the elevation of Big Bear, be thoughtful of the breathing and stay hydrated. If you're just visiting and from a lower elevation. Roughly 1000 foot gain in elevation, which is spread out over 3 miles, as you can imagine isn't terrible at all. Hike this one early, like all of them, parking is limited and fewer mountain bikers to deal with. Helps beat the heat and crowds. You will need an adventure day pass or annual in order to park here. Always check to make sure the trails are open before you go. Wear sunscreen and drink lots of water as always. Family friendly and dog friendly on leashes.
